Somatropin Injection

Somatropin Injection:

Why is This Medication Prescribed?

Somatropin injection is a substitute for the natural growth hormone in people with deficiency. It helps boost growth in children with certain conditions and enhances body weight and endurance in HIV patients with wasting syndrome. It's also prescribed for adults with short bowel syndrome receiving IV nutrition. This hormone analog promotes growth, body weight, and nutrient absorption.

How to Use Somatropin Injection

Somatropin is available as a liquid in prefilled pens and cartridges, and as a powder to be mixed with liquid.

  • Growth Hormone Replacement in Adults: Inject once daily.
  • Growth Hormone Replacement or Growth Increase in Children: Inject once daily, 3-7 days per week.
  • HIV-Associated Wasting Syndrome: Inject once daily or every other day.
  • Short Bowel Syndrome: Inject daily for 4 weeks.

Follow your prescription instructions carefully. Do not alter the dosage without consulting your doctor. You may start with a low dose that your doctor will gradually increase.

Injections can be done at home after proper instructions. Ensure you understand how to inject and dispose of syringes and needles safely. Always inspect the solution before use; it should be clear and colorless. Do not use if it’s expired or cloudy.

Special Precautions

Before using somatropin, inform your doctor if you have:

  • Allergies: To somatropin or any of its components.
  • Medication History: Including prescription, nonprescription drugs, and supplements.
